three TV shows I’ve been enjoying lately.

October is almost over, and I’ve been pretty busy with new work hours, reading good books, and working on my relationship with God. And watching some fun TV shows, as the title of this blog post indicates. I’ve already talked about one of the following shows here on the blog, but I’m always down to fangirl over my favorites. So let’s jump right in!

THE MENTALIST

I’m currently rewatching The Mentalist with my mom, and it’s been a neat experience. The first time I watched the show, I was really impatient and only watched the episodes that focused on the Red John arc. This much more in-depth and leisurely watch-through has been great. I missed so much! My favorite ‘new’ part of the show is the three episode story arc in Season 5 featuring evil businessman Tommy Volker (Henry Ian Cusick). It was cool seeing Cusick in a different role (I previously fell in love with him on Lost), and the arc had lots of great tension throughout.

SMALLVILLE

My friend Charity has recommended Smallville to me on one or two occasions, and one sick day I found it on Prime Video and binge-watched the first several episodes. It’s so much fun! Very corny at times (not unlike the state in which it’s set, heehee), but loads of fun. Having watched The Flash, I’m used to the ‘superhero/villain of the week’ format—though I am looking forward to Smallville branching out and getting into some more involved storylines. I don’t have a clear favorite character yet, but Lex is definitely the most interesting. I really like Jonathan as well. ❤

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER

I’ve only seen the first episode, and I do see the flaws (and the at-times problematic worldview). But I genuinely enjoyed that first episode (I was surprised, but pleased). A friend at church invited me over to her house, which is where I watched it, and we’re planning a sleepover next week to take in the next several episodes as well. The visuals are beautiful, I’m willing to give the characters a chance to win me over, and I’m looking forward to seeing Joseph Mawle in later episodes. (He was great as Odysseus in Troy: Fall of a City.)

Have you seen any or all of these shows? Thoughts? What have you been watching lately? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Just wanted to pop in and say the Tommy Volker storyline is one of my absolute favourites from The Mentalist as well; the tension and build up are, I agree, superbly written and acted, and I kinda love how he sort of becomes to Lisbon what Red John was to Jane.

  2. Ooh, you’re enjoying Smallville? That’s lovely. Lex is absolutely my favorite character, but Chloe comes in a close second despite her invasive personality. She’s just so perky and fun. Seasons 2-4 are the best. If you’re ever interested, Michael and Tom are doing a podcast about Smallville now — 20 years later, rewatching the series and talking about the episodes. They swear sometimes, but it’s been funny to get their reactions (“I remember doing my own stunt that day…” “This makes no sense…” “Kristen was just gorgeous…”). It’s called Talkville.

I enjoyed The Mentalist as well, but I have a hard time totally liking the main character simply because I saw the actor play a skeevy guy in The Devil Wears Prada first.

The Rings of Power… overall, I thought it would have been better with a lot of tweaks. But that’s just my critical side speaking. I didn’t love it, I didn’t despise it, but I also didn’t think it was well-written.

    1. Yes! I’m not even ten episodes in, but it’s really good. I thought the pilot episode was one of the best pilots I’ve ever seen–it set up a LOT in a limited amount of time, and in a way that felt natural.

LOL. I saw The Devil Wears Prada a year or two ago, but I didn’t recognize Simon Baker then. So I’m fine seeing him as a main character. =)

Yeah, RoP doesn’t have the best writing I’ve ever seen. But for me, it’s still entertaining fare!

      1. Yeah, it has an excellent pilot! I used to not care for Jonathan Kent much as a teenager, but he’s grown on me in the years since, as I’ve matured — now I see him for what he is, a father trying to raise a good and moral son. Lex is still my favorite, though!

  3. Last year, I watched Smallville up to the end of season 5. Enjoyed it for a while – I’d say the 3rd and 4th seasons are the best I got to. I’ve also heard that 6 and 7 are pretty good, but the show starts going downhill after Clark moves to Metropolis.

As for Rings of Power, I know there are some who enjoyed it, but for me, each episode got worse than the last. I thought it was just ok after the first two episodes. By the end, I hated it.
Still much better than the She-Hulk Disney+ show though. Speaking as a fan of that character, the She-Hulk show was so bad my bad movie, masochistic self couldn’t get past episode 5, and what I’ve heard of the last four, it’s kind of turned me off of the MCU as a whole for the time being.

    1. Oh yes, I thought of you when She-Hulk episodes started coming out, because I know you really, really like the character in the comics. It doesn’t look like a good show to me, so I’m not surprised you didn’t like it. It’s really unfortunate!

  4. Fun choices! I’ve really been enjoying my Boy Meets World rewatch–I started in Season 3 and wasn’t sure how far I would continue, but I think I will keep going! I didn’t realize how much I was missing Cory, Shawn, and Mr. Feeny. ❤

    1. I’m only on the third episode and I’m already lamenting the fact that season two won’t come out for a couple years. 😦

  5. Eeek!! you tried Rings of Power! 😀 I have been hard pressed to find people who have watched it, haha. My family and I watched it on a slow pace (i.e. as it was released) and heartily enjoyed it. For me, it really peaked around episode 4 or 5 and then the finale episode is pretty stunning as well (although too short). Altogether I really loved it. You’ll have to keep us posted on your thoughts!

    1. Looking forward to seeing what you think of RoP! I just watched the second and third episode last night and I still think it’s good. 🙂
